Imatinib Mysylate drug is used for the treatment of different types of Cancers.
Imatib: Composition
Each capsule of IMATIB 100 contains 100 mg of Imatinib Mesylate, while each tablet of IMATIB 400 contains 400 mg of Imatinib Mesylate.
Imatib: Use
Imatinib used for the treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and several other malignancies. Imatinib mesylate was also found to be effective in systemic mastocytosis patients having D816V mutation. Early different clinical trials also exhibited its possible role for the treatment of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans and hyperosinophilic syndrome. It has been approved as first-line effective treatment by FDA for CML.
It has been revealed that Imatinib is more efficient than the other standard treatments of cytarabine and α-interferon. Imatinib with having tyrosine kinase inhibiting property can be used for the treatment of plexiform neurofibromas related to neurofibromatosis type I. Pulmonary hypertension may also be treated with Imatinib. Imatinib act as experimental agent in laboratory settings which reduce the platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) by preventing its receptor.
Imatib: Dosage
Before starting therapy of malignant sarcomas or hematological malignancies you must consult to your experienced doctor in this field. The dose should be taken orally with meal and glass of water as prescribed by doctor. The dose of 400 mg should be taken two times a day for adults and one time a day for children. For the patients who can't swallow the tablets then they can make the suspension by dispersing the tablet in apple juice or water which should be 50ml for 100 mg and 200ml for 400 mg tablet. After complete dissolution they should take it immediately. The treatment should be continued till the improvement in disease or intolerable toxicity.

Imatinib may cause embryolethality and teratogenicity in animals, therefore its therapy avoided during pregnancy. It may cause bullous skin reactions as Stevens-Johnson syndrome and erythema multiforme. While taking Imatinib may increase the risks of harsh superficial edema, severe fluid retention, papilledema, higher intracranial pressure and cardiac cerebral edema.
